Fascinating analysis, Patrick. I wonder what this means for film makers. Can a movie still earn enough in such a crowded market?

Makes you wonder why US theater chains aren't trying new things to fill seats.

anime is just honestly better than modern Hollywood movies. both Reze arc and the Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle movie are excellent cinema. Avatar 3 put me to sleep.

As a general rule do Japanese audiences prefer dubbed or subbed movies that are not in Japanese? Is this constant across genres and original language?

In the early 2000s, foreign films accounted for over 60% of the Japanese market, so it is not accurate to say that Japanese audiences inherently dislike foreign movies. The sharp decline in the share of foreign films only began in the 2020s, after COVID. Various explanations have been suggested, such as controversies over Disney release cancellations and perceived mismatches in the values portrayed in certain films, but the precise reasons remain unclear.

Thanks, I was wondering if most foreign movies are subtitled ? Or dubbed ? Do audiences have a clear preference ? I cannot watch a "foreign" movie that is dubbed, except for 1970's HK chop-socky flix. "It's ...... a good thing ... you're dead ...... or ......I'd kill you ! "
