Oh I have so much to say about this and I probably shouldn’t in open comments, but, Patrick, I have learned that we are brothers in Star Blazers. What you describe is what I call your ‘catalyst anime’ , the thing that takes you out of just watching into obsession, burning need to know more. For me it started with that full screen title card at the end of the show, something like ‘originally produced in Japan by Yoshinobu Nishizaki as Space Cruiser Yamato’. That led me to a prozine called ‘Fanfare’ with a big article by Fred Patten, which had a picture of the Symphonic Suite Yamato LP, then a fellow fan who collected soundtrack LPs turned me on to a mail order place that actually had that Yamato LP, the obi strip then led me to other albums and so my wayward self entered the floating world of otaku…in Michigan we had no Japantown to run to, you see. 😁
I am a little sad about the Anno announcement only because the year is already 1/3 gone. Bandai has solicited only one model for the upcoming Yamato 3199 and it’s not the Yamato. I am frustrated.
The lack of the original Star Blazers is a huge misstep. Tim will have a more moderate take on this. I think I can safely say it boils down to a lack of will to make it happen. You do NOT want those old DVDs rereleased or (barf!) upscaled for blu ray. Not those cruddy 3rdgen off 16mm syndication prints and barely mastered by Tapeworm. (A turnkey video mastering company mostly known for that wave of Kung Fu tapes in the early 90s).
If all Anno does is a book, that could be cool. I honestly can’t see him doing something in animation to be released around October. That’s way too tight for anything other than like, a commercial.
