Gummies Take the Sweet Spot in 2025
Japan’s gummy market is expanding rapidly. In 2025, gummy sales from January to June reached 66.5 billion yen (about 443 million dollars), surpassing candy at 66.1 billion yen (about 440 million dollars). This marks the first time gummies have overtaken candy, and industry analysts forecast the trend will hold for the entire year. The shift signals a major realignment in Japan’s confectionery sector.
The current boom is being driven by hard type gummies, known for their firm texture. Sales of this segment alone have tripled since 2017. The category overtook gum in 2021, when gum fell to 59.3 billion yen (about 395 million dollars). At Meiji’s Hachioji Innovation Center, researchers developed Oral Maps, a chewing simulator that measures bite resistance and texture. The company released a chewiness chart to match product types with consumer needs such as focus or relaxation.
Why Everyone Is Buying Gummies Now
The popularity of gummies is not based only on texture. They offer a wide range of flavors, do not require disposal like gum, and are convenient for on the go consumption. Purchases are made by children and working adults alike. Inbound tourism has also contributed to demand, as gummies have become a common souvenir choice for foreign visitors.
Analysts point out that candy demand peaks in winter due to throat lozenges, while gummies gain strength in warmer seasons. In 2025, the easing of infectious disease concerns has further weakened demand for throat candy. Since April, gummies have consistently outperformed candy in Japan, making it increasingly likely they will maintain their lead through year end.
The Future Belongs to Chewy Candy
Industry forecasts remain strong. The overall gummy market in Japan doubled between 2017 and 2024, reaching 113.8 billion yen (about 758 million dollars). Growth is expected to continue as companies invest in functional products such as sugar free or vitamin fortified options. Manufacturers are positioning gummies not only as confectionery but also as health oriented products for a wider demographic.
The rise of gummies represents more than a shift in consumer preference. It reflects the ability of manufacturers to adapt products to changing lifestyles and demographics. With continued investment, innovation, and overseas expansion, gummies are set to play a central role in the Japanese confectionery industry for years to come.
My wife loves 忍者めし鉄の鎧 but, like all the best Japanese snacks and drinks, they're not available year round. Hope they come back soon.
