Amazing! I read Father, Son, Sword by Tom Mes from Mondo publishing about the making of the original series but never really appreciated the back story of how the American version was made...until now!
Lone Wolf and Cub’s English translation of the manga was how I first came to learn about this series and then watched Baby Cart and The River Styx. And always dreamed about the possibility of a remake. Then Road to Perdition came out, and now the Mandalorian, but still nothing compares to the visceral quality of Shogun Assassin.
The first viewing blew my mind when it begins with the famous Ezekiel 25:17 quote I came to know from Pulp Fiction.
Thanks! I originally conducted the interviews for this piece around 1998 or thereabouts. The internet was good enough back then for me to find basic contact info, then I cold called the phone numbers I found. Amazingly, everyone was happy to talk about Shogun Assassin... except Mark Lindsay! Well, maybe someday...
