Oshii And Amano’s Vision Returns To Theaters
The 1985 cult anime Angel’s Egg, directed by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) and designed by Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy), has been remastered in 4K HDR. The restored version will premiere in Dolby Cinema theaters on November 14, 2025, before expanding nationwide in Japan on November 21. U.S. distribution has been confirmed by GKIDS, bringing the film to North American audiences for the first time in decades.
Originally released as an OVA with a limited theatrical run in 1985, Angel’s Egg is considered Oshii’s first fully original anime film. While he had previously directed the OVA Dallos in 1983, Angel’s Egg marked his first independent artistic statement. With its near-monochrome palette, minimal dialogue, and unusually long takes, the film became known as a daring and influential work of the 1980s.
Remaster Supervised By Mamoru Oshii
To mark the 40th anniversary, the 35mm original negative has been fully remastered under Oshii’s supervision. Dolby Cinema and Atmos versions have been created, with the original mono soundtrack reconstructed into 5.1 surround. Earlier this year, the film screened in the Cannes Classics section, earning renewed global attention for its striking artistry and dreamlike imagery.
The new trailer opens with a girl’s symbolic question, “Who are you?” as a boy gazes at the sun over a ruined city. He then asks, “What is inside that egg?” hinting at the film’s central enigma. Scenes of submerged ruins and abandoned streets follow, offering audiences a glimpse of the surreal and allegorical world Oshii and Amano created.
Shunji Iwai Reflects On The Film’s Legacy
Acclaimed filmmaker Shunji Iwai (Love Letter, All About Lily Chou-Chou), who first saw Angel’s Egg during its 1985 release, shared a personal reflection:
“1985. Forty years after the war, before we realized it, Japan had become the world’s second largest economic power. We were intoxicated by the limitless possibilities of music, comics, and animation, and through them we gazed at the world and our ordinary daily lives. This film is not an optimistic one, but a fossil-like seal of that era’s faith in the future. The title Angel’s Egg may be a metaphor for a time capsule launched toward tomorrow. Forty more years have passed since then. Now this time capsule is revived in 4K. What will today’s young people think when they see it? I cannot help but wonder.”
A New Chance To Experience A Classic
Alongside the film’s release, the long out-of-print companion volume The Art of Angel’s Egg will be reissued in an expanded and revised edition. Featuring concept art, illustrations, and production materials that showcase the film’s singular vision, the book will be available from October 10, 2025, with pre-orders now open on Amazon Japan.
With its stark visual language and haunting themes, Angel’s Egg remains one of anime’s most enigmatic works. Thanks to the 4K restoration and GKIDS’ U.S. release, both longtime fans and new audiences will finally have the opportunity to experience its powerful vision on the big screen with unprecedented clarity and sound.
I am looking forward to revisiting this. I remember being transfixed by this, seeing it as a bootleg without subtitles at San Diego Comic con probably 25 years ago.
